Rebel cheering met with airstrikes in Aleppo
Cell phone footage circulating on Snapchat and Twitter shows a group of rebel fighters cheering as they make entry into the city of Aleppo. As the group cheers and rides through traffic in the city, an airstrike from either Regime or Russian forces impacts the group, cutting their celebration short. According to sources that have published the content, this footage was just recently recorded and is not from the previous decade plus of Civil War in the country. I also do not personally recognize the footage, which is a solid indicator that the footage should be new; however, the quality does lend itself to the earlier stages of the Syrian Civil War and for that reason I cannot personally independently verify the timeframe that this footage was filmed in.

Cell phone footage recorded by a cameraman who failed his one job shows the use of a OTR-21 Tochka missile system. It's unclear what the target of the attack was at the time, however the weapon system was likely supplied to the Syrian Arab Army by Russia.

GoPro footage released by Tahrir al-Sham shows an assault against Regime positions. The exact location of the assault is unknown, however at the end of the video dozens of prisoners can be seen getting rescued. The affiliation and status of those prisoners is unknown, with some reports on Twitter stating that the majority were women and children being held as political prisoners, and other reports stating that the prisoners were extremists being released to bolster the numbers of HTS. It's very important to remember that the situation in Syria is extremely complex. While the rest of the world has been looking at a very black and white conflict in the Russo-Ukraine war for the last few years, the situation in Syria is anything but. There are at least a dozen different organizations on the ground in Syria operating, and each group has their own objectives and goals out of the Civil War there. You will not find a "Good Guy" or "Bad Guy" situation here unless you're looking directly at groups like the Islamic State who are essentially just pure evil manifested in human form.

This footage shows drones in the Shaheen (Falcon) Brigade being used to drop munitions on retreating Syrian Government forces as they pull back from Kafr Naha, in Western Aleppo. The Syrian army was clearly unprepared for an organized rebel offensive, resulting in large territorial gains for HTS. The large number of troops, marching relatively close together right down the middle of the street, makes it patently obvious who has been paying attention to, and learning lessons from, conflicts like Ukraine or Sudan and who has not.

While blurry, it also shows that the attacking element is fairly well-equipped and organized. While as yet unconfirmed, it has been suggested that this upgrade to HTS' capabilities has been sponsored by another nation seeking to further destabilize Syria.

Some of the familiar clips appear to go back years, when there were several independent insurgent groups. Currently, many of them are united under the Baluchistan Liberation Army (BLA).

Wild footage coming out of Haiti shows what appears to be a killdozer being utilized by a Kenyan-lead multi-national police force during a raid against the infamous Haitian gang leader known as Barbecue. Reports on the raid right now are sporadic, mostly coming from unverified sources, but according to those reports the raid was against the Gang Leader's compound. It is not clear if Barbecue was killed or captured during the raid, and many speculate that he was able to escape the situation.

It's unclear whether these are official Sudanese military or a local militia defending against RSF- both instances are common and uniforms/identifying markers seem fairly rare among both. Apart from a fighter shoulder-firing a recoilless rifle most typically used mounted on a tripod (which is admittedly equal parts ridiculous and sublime), the body language, smiles, and cell phones look like they'd belong in a block party elsewhere.

Although the faction to which the cameraman belongs was not disclosed, this video shows some of the destruction from a recent clash between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a rebellious splinter group of the military that has been responsible for numerous human rights violations and massacres. RSF is also purported to have ties to Wagner Group. This glimpse of the aftermath comes from the Nile region. The burning wreckage and technicals driving at speed (including one being towed) across the desert give a sort of Mad Max impression. Historically, one might draw parallels to the desert truck raids of the SAS in World War Two insofar as appearances, but frankly, neither faction deserves the comparison in efficacy or motive.

Earlier in the week, I released a video of a People's Defense Force element attacking a junta boat with what I assumed was a field-expedient cannon or directional explosive. There have been other recorded instances of PDF's using that strategy earlier in the year. This longer video, showing the same attack as well as others, reveals that the PDF was using a Carl Gustaf recoilless rifle to ambush the boats. Along with the evolution of small arms from slam-bang shotguns to jungle-built AK's, this demonstrates how quickly the anti-junta units adopt and adapt to newer, more complex firepower.

Footage like this, while seemingly boring, paints an interesting picture of the on-going insurgency and Civil War in Myanmar that is worth keeping an eye on. For anyone interested in insurgent warfare, the groups here have successfully found a way to blend modern warfighting tactics with classic guerilla techniques to achieve outstanding success against a force that is, on paper, superior in every way.

This footage, provided by a Houthi media outlet, shows the shootdown and wreckage of an ostensibly American MQ-9 Predator drone. It was downed by a loitering SAM- likely an Iranian missile known as a "358" which is made of mostly commercial, off-the-shelf (COTS) parts. The "358" therefore has a value of around $50k-$100k, versus a conservatively estimated $15M per Reaper. This is the third Reaper shot down in a week, and the 13th since October 2023. While losing drones is infinitely better than losing pilots, the frequency with which the US is allowing their MQ-9 fleet to be impugned is a source of ongoing debate regarding expense and strategy.
