Seattle Police drop armed suspect
This compilation of dashcam and bodycam footage shows Seattle Police officers responding to 911 calls regarding a man armed with a handgun- reports which were corroborated by security camera feed. Attempts to negotiate with and de-escalate the suspect rapidly failed as the suspect pointed his handgun at the officers, at which point they opened fire. Viewer discretion is advised. The first officer on-scene used his pistol whilst his backup got out of his vehicle with a patrol rifle. When the suspect pointed his handgun at the contact officer, the contact officer opened fire, downing the suspect. When the suspect refused to drop the weapon, the second officer neutralized the threat with the long gun. While not shown here, the report states that a 40mm less-than-lethal round was used to knock the handgun from the suspect's grasp, in order for the officers to begin CPR and medical aid. Despite these efforts, the suspect was pronounced dead on-scene. A bystander who was injured by shattered glass was taken to the hospital for treatment. No other persons were injured.

I don't normally preface videos like this, but the footage seen here from Bagley, Minnesota, requires viewer discretion. While not especially gory, a Vietnam veteran shoots a flare gun at deputy, forcing another deputy to shoot and kill him. The shoot, and the deputy's emotional response to having to kill the man, are all here, and it's a difficult watch. The psychological toll of taking a life that need not have been taken but for their actions is rarely shown on camera, and needs to be discussed more. Leaving such weight unaddressed is what leads to mental health crises and suicides in turn. Dennis Hoie, a Vietnam veteran at 75 years of age, had outstanding felony warrants for his arrest. When confronted, he fled in his truck, causing a brief chase and Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT maneuver) to be utilized. Deputy Hallman broke the glass on Hoie's passenger side, as Hoie produced a flare gun and fired at Deputies on the driver side. This being lethal force, Hallman responded by shooting Hoie through the broken passenger side window. Despite aid rendered, Hoie was pronounced deceased on-scene. The deputy hit by the flare suffered a non-serious graze to his head. Hallman's emotional reaction to what he had to do is included on this video as he talks with his supervisor before turning off his camera. I hope it was included with his permission, but in any case I'd like to thank Clearwater County for including the often downplayed or ignored facet of what "suicide by cop" can do to the responding officers.

This compilation of 911 call and bodycam footage come from Las Vegas, Nevada. The 911 call provides context for the use of force that follows. A driver at a local apartment complex reported that the suspect had threatened him with a knife. Las Vegas Metro PD officers made contact with the suspect, and the suspect physically and violently resisted. Forewarned by the 911 call, the officers were predisposed to the belief that the object in the suspect's hand, and his movements with it, corresponded to the knife in question. This prompted one of the officers to shoot the suspect. However, the object in the suspect's hand was later revealed to be a vape pen. Although the suspect survived, viewer discretion is advised. The suspect, identified as Wade Griffith, 38 years of age, was found to be in possession of one large, sheathed knife in his backpack, as well as an empty sheath for another knife. At the time of the incident and shooting, Griffith was charged with two counts of armed robbery with a deadly weapon, two counts of battery on a LEO with the same, and two counts of resisting with said weapon. With the caveat that I am not a lawyer, given that a vape pen was in his hand I'm not certain that most of those charges will hold up.

His attempt to flee in his vehicle ended up with the suspect on foot in a muddy field. Given that most people can't outrun a K9 on perfect terrain, this guy had no chance. This footage from El Centro, California, shows local police attempting to interdict persons suspected of having stolen a car. However, when the suspects accelerate toward the officers in an aggressive manner, an officer shoots the driver, killing him. Because the driver and suspect was a minor, viewer discretion is advised. A license plate scanner alerted local authorities of plates belonging to a stolen white Hyundai, and police tracked it to a restaurant. When the the officers attempted to move in, the suspects fled. In a bid to escape with the vehicle, the driver aggressively accelerated toward the officers before being shot and killed. When the police officer opened fire, there were two officers directly in front of the Hyundai. Although aid was rendered on-scene by both police and local EMS, the driver was declared deceased. Two other minors, deemed uninvolved with the crime, were in the backseat of the car at the time.

This bodycam footage coming from Akron, Ohio, shows an officer responding to reports that a man was behaving erratically and in an intoxicated manner at a local bar. 911 calls further reported that the suspect was pointing what appeared to be a gun through the windows of said bar and had made threats to shoot. When the officer made contact, the suspect made a movement which was interpreted as a reach to draw a weapon. The Akron officer fired no less than 15 times, but the suspect survived. No weapon was found. Despite the suspect's survival, viewer discretion is advised. The officer made contact and immediately ordered the suspect to get on the ground, repeatedly warning him he would be shot. The suspect made a movement toward his pocket which the cop perceived as a threat, compounded by the 911 calls and dispatch information. In an approximate 18 seconds, the officer went from contact to dumping 15 rounds into the suspect. The officer calmly identified himself as Akron police and radioed in, conducting a mag change as the suspect lay wounded on the ground. Medical aid was rendered and the suspect was taken to an area hospital with what Akron Police termed "serious injuries". No weapons were found on the suspect, prompting an ongoing investigation into the reports and claims.

This compilation of bodycam and dashcam footage covers a homicide suspect springing two different ambushes on police in Pueblo, Colorado. After the suspect opens fire on the officers with an assault rifle and makes his escape, a retired but ready Army veteran uses a CLS bag to patch up a wounded officer. Later on, the Pueblo police confront and shoot the suspect. Viewer discretion is advised. Billy Soto was wanted by the FBI in regard to an attempted murder. Police in Pueblo, Colorado attempted to contact and arrest Soto, but as the officer stopped his car, Soto opened fire with an AR-pattern rifle before running away. Despite firing several rounds, only one officer was hit, and only once. As fate would have it, a bystander happened to be a retired soldier, and he happened to have a Combat Life Saver bag on him. Luck favors the prepared. While the stricken officer was treated and evacuated, a perimeter was established and a search began for Soto. An approximate half hour after the first encounter, he opened fire again, striking two more officers. Amid a fourth exchange of gunfire, Soto was struck. Despite medical aid rendered, Billy Soto was declared deceased on-scene. All three injured officers were treated for their injuries and released from hospital care the same day. No other persons were injured.

This bodycam footage shows officers in Salt Lake City, Utah, interacting with a suspect who may have been involved in a fight. However, he refuses to answer their questions to confirm his involvement or injuries. Instead he pockets large decorative rocks from the curb and attempts to flee. As the officers give chase, he hits one of them in the head with a thrown rock. Because rocks of that size could conceivably do lethal damage, the officer responds by shooting him. Viewer discretion is advised. Although bystanders confirmed a disturbance or fight did occur, no one positively identified Jose Hernandez as being involved. The initial 911 call referenced someone losing consciousness, and Hernandez' behavior is decidedly erratic. He refuses to answer their questions and stuffs rocks into his hoodie pocket. The officer insists that he put them back, as they are not his property. It's unsaid but he probably registers them as being intended weapons, as well. The officer asks him "Do you want to do this over a rock?" As Hernandez attempts to walk away, the officer warns bystanders away. While he has his gun drawn, another cop (whose point of view is shown at 01:16) attempts to go less-than-lethal with a TASER, but Hernandez breaks out in a run. Turning, he throws a rock which hits the first officer in the head. This constitutes Academy-textbook deadly force- while it may not kill the officer outright, it presents the possibility of the officer being knocked unconscious and his weapons taken. Therefore, the officer shoots Hernandez with one round. Although aid was rendered on-scene, Hernandez later died after being transported to an area hospital. The officer was treated for a non-life threatening injury.

This wild footage coming from Denver, Colorado, shows officers attempting to resolve a rapidly unfolding hostage situation in an area gas station. The suspect and hostage taker didn't have enough money for a pack of cigarettes, and the situation deteriorated to him pulling out a handgun and taking the staff hostage. When a gunshot rings out inside the gas station, the responding officers are left with no choice but to dynamically attempt to stop the shooter. Viewer discretion is advised. The suspect, later identified as Hosea Moore, 35 years of age, attempted to buy a single cigarette upon realizing he did not have enough money for a whole pack. When the clerks informed him that they didn't sell singles, he pulled out a handgun and told them to lock the doors. Moore went so far as to put his ID on the counter, as if he intended for this to go down a specific way. He also drank several bottles of Fireball and smoked the cigarette he wanted so evidently desperately. As the officers arrived to respond to this situation, they heard a gunshot inside the store. Breaching through the glass, they encountered Hosea as they moved to protect the clerks. A gunfight ensued, with both the suspect and the officers firing multiple rounds- between both parties, an approximate 70 rounds were fired. After the chaos subsided, Moore was in critical condition. He was later pronounced deceased at an area hospital. Both the gas station clerks suffered minor injuries- ironically, these were determined to have been caused by spalling and fragments of the officers' rounds. These minor wounds were quickly treated and both were released from care the same night. One of the responding officers was shot in the leg. Released the following day, he is expected to recover.

This footage from Seattle, Washington, shows several officers responding to a call which initially concerned a man armed with an axe. However, the suspect fled upon officer contact. Understanding the man to be armed, the officers tried to use less-than-lethal options as they attempted to corner the man. Things take a sharp turn as the suspect produces a handgun and points it at an officer- before experiencing a malfunction. As he struggles with the weapon, several officers open fire, ultimately killing him. Viewer discretion is advised. The suspect, later identified as Jack Paleli, 46 years of age, had a solid five seconds of uninterrupted time to fire before the police began to shoot. Had his weapon not jammed, or had he properly known what to do about it, this video may have had a different outcome. But as it stands, no officers or bystanders were injured. Paleli was pronounced dead on-scene.

This bodycam footage, from Amherst, New York, shows a suspect armed with a knife as she charges police officers. Without the element of surprise, this naturally results in the woman being shot. Fortunately, a suicide-by-cop situation was avoided as the suspect survived her injuries. However, due to the subject matter, viewer discretion is advised. Amherst police officers were alerted that Tanisha Green, 26 years of age, was armed with a knife and behaving in a menacing manner. They took the threat seriously, arriving on-scene with AR-15s ready. Green charged at one of the officers, at which point she was shot. Due to medical aid rendered on-scene and follow-on care at an area hospital, she survived her injuries. She was indicted on arraignment for second-degree menacing and menacing a Police Officer- charges which together could incur a 20-year sentence. With the caveat that I am not a lawyer, charging an officer with a deadly weapon can and has been considered deadly intent in numerous prior cases across several states. The fact that she was not charged with attempted murder at worst and assault at best could indicate either a plea deal or the court recognizing mental health as an issue.

This compilation of dashcam, bodycam, and thermal helicopter footage shows a gunfight at an In-And-Out restaurant in Laguna Hills, California. Multiple officers from area departments attempted to stop a suspected stolen vehicle which was connected to a recent murder, but the suspect fled. After a vehicle chase, the suspect exited his vehicle and initiated a gunfight with the police officers. The suspect is struck by gunfire and ultimately killed. Viewer discretion is advised. When a license plate reader alerted them, area police officers attempted to interdict a vehicle which was implicated in a murder that occurred earlier in the day. However, the suspect refused to stop, leading the officers on a chase. He was later identified as Andre Matijasevic, 31 years of age. He led the police on a vehicle pursuit before parking and exiting the vehicle. He fired at officers and their vehicles as he made his way toward a local In-And-Out fast food restaurant with patrons and staff inside. During the exchange of gunfire, Matijasevic was struck multiple times. Even as he fell prone to the ground he continued to fire, resulting in a Hallmark example of why police shoot until the threat has subsided. A K9 unit was deployed to assist in separating the suspect from his weapon. Despite aid rendered on-scene, the suspect was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

This combination of security camera and bodycam footage comes courtesy of the New York Police Department (NYPD). It shows their officers attempting to apprehend a suspect wanted for armed robbery. In serving this warrant, the officers make some decidedly confusing choices. After discharging a weapon in his apartment, the suspect charges out of the domicile and seriously injures an officer before trying to flee. Another officer fires, striking the suspect twice. Although he survives, viewer discretion is advised. NYPD officers gathered at the apartment of Antonio Morales, 18 years of age, in order to serve a warrant for his arrest. Morales was suspected of robbery at gunpoint. When the officers made contact, he at first refused to open the door. Morales was heard to fire several rounds from a weapon inside the apartment, which prompts one officer to hold the door for some reason- as if that'll stop him shooting through it- while the other officers draw weapons and dither in an almost textbook crossfire. Morales pries the door from the officer trying to hold it and charges down the hallway toward what I assume is a security officer before doubling back and shoving Officer Doorstop to the ground. The downed officer suffered a serious head injury. Morales passes by the only officer in the footage who looks like he's in shape for tackling a fleeing suspect- who, despite having a gun drawn, has been mostly engaged in holding the elevator open- and gets shot twice by a female officer not seen in the latter part of the security footage. While she had been holding the perimeter, Morales had been heading her direction, presumably to escape the main door. He all but literally smacks into her, and she seems almost surprised as the suspect when she hits him with two rounds. Although his weapon cannot be seen, it has to be said that she had every reason to believe him to be armed in a rapidly unfolding situation. Morales was transported to an area hospital, and his handgun was found on-scene. Morales has been charged with the following in addition to the original warrant: Reckless Endangerment, Assaulting a Police Officer, Criminal Possession of a Weapon.

This footage, provided by the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office in Florida, shows their Deputies responding to a suspect actively attempting to shoot someone in a local apartment complex. When they locate the suspect, still armed, a gunfight ensues. Although the victim ultimately survived her injuries, viewer discretion remains advised. 911 calls alerted the Sheriff's Office that the suspect, later identified as Javier Jara, 50 years of age, was attempting to shoot someone. Cell phone footage supplied by a witness shows Jara acting erratically and jumping through a window. He confronts someone before returning to his apartment on the 4th floor and shooting a 46-year-old woman in the chest and firing several more rounds in the apartment. Witnesses then pointed the Deputies to Jara's location, where an exchange of gunfire ensued. When Jara continued to try to manipulate his handgun, the officers established a perimeter and await SRT. SRT found Jara unresponsive, whereupon local Fire Rescue pronounced him deceased. His victim was taken to an area hospital and was stabilized, ultimately surviving her injuries. No other persons were harmed.

The suspect flees on foot, dropping a magazine and a handgun as he runs. When he picks up the dropped weapon, the police shoot him. Viewer discretion is advised. The suspect, 19 years of age but name withheld, ignored direct orders and resisted being detained. Upon breaking free, he dropped an extended handgun magazine. As he fled from police, he similarly lost control of his handgun, and fumbled it repeatedly in picking it up, kicking it. Despite being warned by police, when he finally got it fully in-hand, he was shot multiple times. He was transported to an area hospital, but died from injuries sustained. The handgun and an additional 17-round magazine were found on-scene and his person.
