Sherman tanks advance on Nazi positions in Italy
Sherman tanks of the Canadian 1st Armored Brigade advance on German positions during Operation Diadem in May of 1944. Diadem, also known as The Fourth Battle of Monte Casino, or the Battle of the Liri Valley in Canada, was an attempt by the allies to break a nine-month stalemate, breach a belt of fortifications extending across the Italian peninsula known as the Gustav line, and defeat the German 10th and 14th Armies. The operation was successful and ultimately resulted in the capture of Rome.
