Greek F-16 fighter in flames

An F-16C Fighting Falcon of the Hellenic Air Force burns after making an emergency landing at Zakynthos International Airport in Southern Greece. An Air Force spokesperson reported that the aircraft, one of 100 operated by Greece, suffered an unspecified technical issue while participating in a training exercise on July 9, forcing the pilot to make an emergency belly landing. The pilot survived and walked away from the aircraft without ejecting. As far as Greek tragedies go, this is undoubtedly disappointing but not on the same level as killing your father and marrying your mother, or having your wife kill your kids out of revenge (if you did not get that reference, go read some Greek tragedies).

Denmark chooses Euro air defense over patriot

In April 2026, the Danish government signed a contract to procure the European SAMP/T NG air defense system rather than the U.S.-manufactured Patriot missile system. This is part of a more than $9 billion Danish investment in upgrading its air defense capabilities, most of which will now go to European manufacturers. The SAMP/T NG is a medium range air-defense system developed by Eurosam, a joint Franco-Italian venture, and offers high mobility and interoperability with other NATO systems. Danish government sources indicate that the choice of the SAMP/T NG over the Patriot was driven by faster delivery times for the European platform, out of a desire to engage with European manufacturers, and of a desire for greater independence from U.S. suppliers.

French carrier transits strait of Gibraltar

The French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle transits the Strait of Gibraltar in heavy weather. The strait is the narrow passage which separates the Mediterranean from the Atlantic Ocean, and Morocco lies on the southern edge of the strait while Spain lies to the north, though Gibraltar itself remains a possession of Great Britain. Commissioned in 2001, Charles de Gaulle is the tenth French aircraft carrier and the first nuclear powered surface vessel in French service. The vessel carries a wing of thirty Dassault Rafale M fighters and about ten other assorted aircraft.

Spain seizes 10 tons of cocaine hidden in salt shipment

Spain reportedly made its biggest drug bust in history as it seized 10 tons of cocaine that was hidden in a salt shipment from Brazil. It's unclear how the Spanish National Police were tipped off, but US Drug Enforcement Officers (DEA) can be seen in one of the clips, so it's possible the incident was a side quest in Operation Southern Spear.
