S. Koreans practice killing drone swarms
An air defense battery with the South Korean air force conducted an exercise to test defensive techniques against FPV drone swarms. The exercise show in the video pitted gatling guns against a swarm of fifty drones. The results were not promising as at least half the drones, which hovered in place and made easy targets, survived the initial barrage. It is unknown whether the guns were aided by a radar or IR targeting system. I have argued for some time that western militaries, including the United States, must develop anti-drone capabilities which are layered, overlapping, and which protect all combat arms and service support elements. A system which can produce a large volume of fire, like the ones shown, is an integral part of such a defensive network, but those guns should have some semi-autonomous targeting capability and should be integrated with other systems as well as with passive defensive measures.

The IKA drone comes in a variety of configurations, with some equipped with rockets, others with machine guns, some carrying cargo, and some delivering robot dogs armed with rockets. The bomber looks more like an aerial mortar.

Recently the Swedish Archer 8X8 artillery system passed a full system test. Designed by Bofors and manufactured by BAE systems, the Archer is built around an automated L52 155mm howitzer and a M151 remote-controlled weapon station on a Volvo chassis. The manufacturers claim that the system can be deployed and firing within thirty seconds, offering the potential for rapid deployment, versatility, and mobility. The Swedish Army has operated a 6X6 variant since 2016, and the 8X8 is considered a substantial upgrade.

The future of the Light Armored Vehicle is here. Footage shows a General Dynamic Land Systems LAV equipped with the Kongsberg MCT-30 turret test firing the Bushmaster II 30 mm chain gun. The ammunition featured has the ability to penetrate through an exterior surface to explode on the inside of a building, showering defenders in shrapnel, or can pound and destroy walls made of concrete cinder block. The 25mm round currently fired by the LAV and Bradley platforms is quite formidable, but this is another level of awesome.

On Friday Jan. 16, 2026, China attempted two rocket launches, but both failed as the rockets exploded after takeoff. Reports are conflicting as some claim both launches were to put Shijian satellites into orbit, while other reports claim that a Long March 3B exploded with a satellite on board, but the second launch was merely a test flight of a Ceres-2 rocket. While failure is an important learning component of the research and development process, two major failures in a single day is a bad look.

The Canadian Royal Navy has just conducted its first successful test of an explosive-laden unmanned kamikaze surface vessel (USV), essentially a remote controlled boat bomb. The weapon is being called the Hammerhead, and the test footage shows it not only carries an extremely potent explosive payload, but it also appears the vessel is fast and nimble in delivering its ordnance. The Ukrainian military has pushed the envelope of warfare, as their effective USV attacks against Russian Naval vessels are the inspiration for Canada's research and development of the Hammerhead. The Yemeni Houthis are already using their own (Iranian) designs of USVs for terror purposes, striking cargo vessels in the Red Sea. These USV pose a major threat to navies across the world, so even as countries develop their own USVs, they are also developing ways to defeat them.

Promotional footage taken in 2024 of South Korean K239 Chunmoo MLRS firing at the sustained rate. The K239 was developed in 2013 and can accommodate various pods firing different munitions. One contains twenty K33 131mm unguided rockets, with a range of 36 kilometers. The second pod holds KM26A2 230mm rockets, similar to the M26 BPICM rockets used by the South Korean M270 MLRS vehicle. The third pod holds Six 239 mm Chunmoo guided rockets which can be fitted with a variety of warheads. The system is versatile and can fire sustained barrages while maintaining accuracy. In addition to being employed by the South Korean military, the K239 was recently acquired by the Polish Army as part of its massive military buildup. Originally, the Poles hoped to acquire the American HIMARS system, but when that system could not be produced in sufficient numbers, the Polish government opted for both HIMARS and 300 South Korean K239 systems.

The inventor demonstrates that jumping at just the right moment will deflect a dropped grenade. Of course, this does not account for the fact that the estimated casualty radius (ECR) for a grenade is fifteen meters, or that the ECR of a 60mm mortar round is even greater, assuming that it does not merely plunge through the mesh. Nor does it explain how the wearer is supposed to low crawl and find defilade to employ machine gun fire. Nor does it explain how one might navigate wearing this contraption. So much attention has been paid to drones that some have forgotten that bullets and shrapnel can kill people.
