U.S. Navy launches attack drone in Middle East
Footage released to the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service shows the first ever launch of what is being called a LUCAS drone from the flight deck of the Independence-class littoral combat ship USS Santa Barbara. LUCAS class drones, short for Low-cost Unmanned Combat Attack System, are designed for one-way precision attacks. This first-ever use of the weapon system was conducted in the Arabian Gulf as part of Task Force Scorpion Strike, which is in line with the Pentagon's new strategy to rapidly acquire and employ low-cost drone systems to bolster American offensive and defensive capabilities globally.
