AQ Assault with Motorcycle Machine Gun
Al Qaeda-affiliated jihadists assault an army outpost in a village in northern Burkina Faso. Like its Sahel neighbors, Mali and Niger, Burkina Faso has been plagued by roving bands of Islamist insurgents, which drift back and forth across international borders, complicating the implementation of a coherent security strategy. Burkina Faso has increased cooperation with Mali and Niger and obtained support from Russia. Combined with a rapid military buildup and arms purchases from China, Burkina Faso hopes to stamp out extremist groups and emerge as a dominant member of a regional power bloc.
