Militants target strategic roads in Mali
JNIM militants have stepped up attacks on strategic roads in Mali, targeting civilian traffic and road repair equipment. In this footage we see tanker trucks burning. Recent attacks have focused on the Bamako to Segou road and the Bamako to Sikasso road, the latter of which connects Mali to its neighbor and strategic partner, Burkina Faso. These attacks are seen as an attempted blockade, severing the capital from regional centers and trade partners. In response, the Malian government has taken an approach that is far more aggressive than past western-led counterinsurgency efforts. Their current approach includes raids, targeted drone strikes of militant and separatist leaders, and the detention of those with ties to militants or separatists.
