Russians train Malian Militia
ootage from this February past showing instructors from Russia’s Africa Corps (formerly the Wagner Group) training Malian militiamen in basic in infantry combat drills. The fighters are members of The Imghad Tuareg Self-Defense Group and Allies (GATIA), an ethnic Tuareg militia in Azawad, Mali. Gatia has pledged support for the Malian government and opposes both ISIS and other anti-government militias. Despite fearsome losses in Ukraine, Russia continues to commit personnel and resources to building influence in Africa. Members of Russia’s Africa Corps are involved in conflicts in countries across the continent, including Mali, Sudan, Central African Republic, and Niger. In exchange for security assistance, the Russian government gains access to resources, including timber, gold, diamonds, rare earth metals, and other precious minerals. Recently, the government in Niger declared Russia its greatest strategic partner, granted Russia the use of military installations, and granted the Kremlin access to 5% of the world’s uranium supply. Furthermore, Africa has turned into a source for recruits for a Russian Army that is bleeding to death in Ukraine.

Footage from January showing the latest ISIS affiliate, Lakurawa, which is wreaking havoc in West Africa, largely in Niger and Mali. Last year, Lakurawa was just another small jihadist group in Niger pledging loyalty to ISIS and doing rather terrible things but on a smaller scale. After the military coup in Niger, many tribes which had previously been unaffiliated decided to join Lakurawa’s ranks, giving the group substantial momentum. The army in Niger was able to launch a successful operation against the group around the time of this video, presumably killing its leader, but the organization has rebounded and continues to spread chaos.

A man purported to be a Colombian mercenary serving alongside Rapid Support Force (RSF) fighters in Sudan. Sources allege that a Colombian mercenary, though not necessarily this man, was killed yesterday during a failed RSF attack near the town of Al-Fasher. Sources indicate that recruiting companies with ties to UAE, a supporter of the RSF, have used promises of security contracts in Africa and the Middle East to lure Colombian veterans into participating in the war in Sudan. Driven by a wavering Colombian economy, these men are funneled into Sudan through Chad, Libya, and Somalia, where they serve alongside the RSF for $2,600–3,400 per month.

In an effort to combat extremist groups such as ISIS, the Malian government entered into a cooperation agreement with Russia, which pledged security assistance in exchange for access to natural resources. The activities were previously handled by Wagner Group, a Private Military Contractor, but after an attempted coup, the organization was de-privatized, its founder assassinated, and its assets placed under the control of the Russian Ministry of Defense. Re-branded “Africa Corps,” the group has been operating cooperatively with Malian government forces. The militants that conducted this attack are likely a tribal group but may be affiliated with Al Qaeda.

The Somali government is currently in crisis, as Al Shabaab militants have the federal army on its heels and are attempting to encircle the captial of Mogadishu. Al Shabaab’s success has been due, in part, to rifts between the federal administration and several regional governments, which have prevented the implementation of a coherent strategy to counter the extremists. UAE’s decision to deliver aid to Puntland and not the federal government is deliberate, part of a strategy to establish a presence and build military infrastructure by partnering with local polities more willing to compromise than central government in Mogadishu. The results are beneficial to the people of Puntland, but detrimenatal to creation of a unified and functional Somali state.

Footage recorded in April of this year shows combat operations occurring near the Russian Africa Corps Base located at Sévaré Airport in Mali. The event, which occurred on April 25, 2026, shows members of Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimin, the al-Qaeda affiliate in the Sahel, launching coordinated attacks across Mali alongside its new tactical ally, the Tuareg-dominated Azawad Liberation Front, who are better known as the FLA. These strikes targeted Malian military and Russian Africa Corps positions in multiple locations, including the capital Bamako area, Gao, Kidal in the north, and crucially the central region around Mopti and Sévaré. Malian army statements, issued via the General Staff, confirmed clashes with “unidentified armed terrorist groups” in Sévaré and other sites, while framing the overall events as a thwarted coup attempt. JNIM claimed responsibility for strikes in Mopti, Sévaré, and elsewhere, later releasing its own propaganda video of the Sévaré operation, which can be seen above. The Sévaré assault specifically targeted the strategic Malian army base and adjacent Sévaré/Mopti Airport facilities, which host key air assets, a major central Mali military hub, and Russian Africa Corps personnel/barracks. JNIM fighters conducted a ground assault supported by drones, dropping explosives on positions inside the base, targeting aircraft, helicopters, and personnel. Social media and later JNIM-released footage show multiple drone strikes on Malian and Russian Africa Corps assets at the Mopti Airport and Sévaré site, with militants advancing and reportedly overrunning or infiltrating parts of the outpost.

Footage released by Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin, better known as JNIM, captures the moment and improvised explosive device strikes an unarmored military vehicle in Nigeria. Having personally seen a few IED strikes against unarmored pickup trucks of this type, it's highly unlikely that anyone walked out of this attack without, at the very least, serious injuries.
