The Malian military and members of Russia’s Africa Corps conducted operations against militant groups throughout the country. Compilation footage shows government troops employing MRAP-type vehicles, trucks, and infantry, and conducting drone strikes. The Islamist threat has been compared to the mythical hydra, the many-headed beast which grows two heads for every one that is struck off. Mobility and flexibility are required to face such a threat.

A Compilation of footage showing a Burkina Faso army camp near Gamboro which has been raided by Al Qaeda-affiliated militants. The facility is fortified by Hesco surrounding a compound with a few crude structures. Damaged or destroyed military vehicles can be seen littering the compound. The raiders moved in on motorcycles, and the absence of military casualties or prisoners makes me wonder if the soldiers merely left when the militants arrived. Like other countries in the Sahel, Burkina Faso has been plagued by Islamists bands seeking to erode public trust in the government’s ability to maintain security. The country is engaged in substantial efforts to build its military and is courting foreign allies, such as Russia.

Their operational methods appear effective and create significant problems for the nations of the Sahel, though JNIM lacks the panache of the Toecutter, and none of militants are riding anything as sweet as a 1978 Kawasaki KZ-1000.

Recent attacks have focused on the Bamako to Segou road and the Bamako to Sikasso road, the latter of which connects Mali to its neighbor and strategic partner, Burkina Faso. These attacks are seen as an attempted blockade, severing the capital from regional centers and trade partners. In response, the Malian government has taken an approach that is far more aggressive than past western-led counterinsurgency efforts. Their current approach includes raids, targeted drone strikes of militant and separatist leaders, and the detention of those with ties to militants or separatists.

RADA participated in the 2011 uprising which ousted longtime dictator Muammar Gaddafi, and now exists as a radical Islamist special operations police force which tackles high profile crime. Consisting of about 1,500 members, RADA is the third or fourth largest militia in Tripoli and controls key locations, such as Mitiga Airport. A deadline for RADA to stand down and to cede control to forces loyal to the GNU has come and gone, resulting in both sides calling reinforcements to Tripoli. Bloodshed in the capital is imminent.

Since the fall of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, the country has struggled to establish a functioning government, and conflict between warring factions has resulted in instability and an inability of the central government to guarantee security. External actors have taken advantage of the lawlessness in Libya to use the country as a staging ground to support factions in regional conflicts. Much of the aid funneled by UAE to RSF rebels in Sudan flows through Libya, and the RSF often retreats to the Libyan desert to regroup and resupply. Similar support is given to Azawad militants in Mali, who are at odds with the government, the Russian Africa Corps supporting the government, and with the Islamic militants plaguing the Sahel.

Militiamen fighting alongside the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) pose alongside a burning armored personnel carrier. The vehicle is a NIMR Ajban 440A, a wheeled armored personnel carrier produced in the UAE and provided to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The SAF and RSF have waged a brutal civil war for several years, which has since evolved into a proxy war between regional and national powers. The UAE has been a stanch, though clandestine support of the RSF, providing weapons and funding and a marketplace for smuggled goods and resources, while Russia has also deployed Wagner Group and Africa Corps troops in support of the RSF. On the other side, the SAF is supported by Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Eritrea, and some sources indicate that Ukraine has sent operatives and drones to thwart Russian interests. The result is ongoing violence and an RSF that refuses to die. They currently seef to secure territorial gains in Darfur and have declared a parallel government to the one in Khartoum. Even if they suffer serious setbacks, the RSF will retreat into Syria and await support, which UAE will grant in hope of a negotiated settlement that will grant them influence in the region.

However, you wouldn't know the stakes are that dire by looking at our intrepid cameraman. He's grinning ear-to-ear as he takes selfies with a pair of Toyota technicals. They're armed with machine guns and an MLRS, respectively. The 'Thon Is On and our guy is loving it. As a Sergeant of mine once said, "if you can't get out of it, get into it!"

Fighters from the al-Qaeda-affiliated group, Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), mounted on motorcycles and equipped with small arms, attacked a compound in north-western Burkina Faso, killing several soldiers and seizing military weapons and vehicles. Though shaky and possibly not in chronological order, we see militants attacking the enclosure on foot, before burning and pillaging the compound. According to the source, witnesses described the attack as organized, with dozens of militants suddenly storming the outpost and overwhelming the defenders. Items seized include four military vehicles, two DShK heavy machine guns, a mortar, seven RPG launchers, eight PK machine guns, and 34 Kalashnikov rifles, as well as uniforms, boots, ammunition, and magazines.
